Princess and the Frog Showcase

Good afternoon and welcome to my page!

Upon the release of my Ray Firefly pattern on Patreon, I realised that I had not actually done a post featuring the full set. Today, I want to showcase the completed Princess and the Frog set providing you with information about each dolls dimensions as well as various pictures (see gallery above). The total set comprises of 7 different characters: Princess Tiana, Frog Tiana, Prince Naveen, Frog Naveen, Ray Firefly, Louis Alligator and Dr Facilier.

The patterns for Ray, Louis, frog Naveen and frog Tiana will only be available on my Patreon page. The pattern for September is Ray Firefly and he is available now to all of my patrons. As for Princess Tiana, Prince Naveen the base doll patterns are available in my Etsy store and I will be posting a how-to tutorial on how to customise your doll into the various princes and princesses. This will be available for free on my website and will include downloadable templates for the eyes and the clothes. I have not yet posted the altered Arlo pattern for Dr Facilier but he will be added soon. (Anyone who purchases the Arlo doll base before the addition of this amendment will receive an email and link to download it upon its release). There will also be a how-to tutorial for Dr Facilier.

Just keep scrolling to see the relevant information about each character.

PRINCESS TIANA

Princess Tiana is made using the Avery doll base which is available in my Etsy store here. The finished height of the doll if made using 4ply yarn with a 2.5mm hook is approximately 9.5 inches. I have also made the doll using aran yarn which resulted in a doll approximately 12.5 inches tall.
Due to the large size of the head and thin neck, the doll requires the use of craft wire to hold up the head. I used eyes that I created in Inkscape. These were printed out onto T-shirt transfer paper and then ironed onto white felt. Finally, I cut out the eyes and glued on using felt glue. I did my best to replicate Tiana’s hairline – even leaving space for the possible addition of ears (I am still toying with this idea). As mentioned above I will be posting a how-to tutorial on how to create Tiana’s felt dress. There will also be crochet patterns for her hat and coat set as well as her waitress uniform available on my Patreon page. I will be doing felt versions of these outfits – the tutorials will be available on my website.

FROG TIANA

My frog Tiana pattern will only be available on my Patreon page. The finished height of the doll if made using 4ply yarn with a 2mm hook is approximately 8 inches.
I was not happy with the overall look of my first Tiana. The neck down was good but the head and face did not resemble her enough (in my opinion anyway). But knowing what I was not happy with and what I needed to change enabled me to go back, adjust and get it right the second time. This pattern will require some contouring of the head, which is a method that I have seen but not actually implemented into any of my patterns. I am still finishing off my second Tiana but will update this post with the new pictures once she is done.
As with my frog Naveen this frog Tiana can be fully wired through the arms and legs to make her poseable. However, this is completely optional – she will look the same wired or not. Her arms and legs would dangle but she will still stand if being propped up against something. To finish off my frog Tiana I added felt to the eyes.

PRINCE NAVEEN

Prince Naveen is made using the Arlo doll base which is available in my Etsy store here. The finished height of the doll if made using 4ply yarn with a 2.5mm hook is approximately 11.5 inches.
Due to the large size of the head and thin neck, this doll also requires the use of craft wire to hold up the head. As with my Princess Tiana doll, I used the eyes that I created in Inkscape. These were printed out onto T-shirt transfer paper and then ironed onto white felt. After which I cut out the eyes and glued on using felt glue. The hair was more complicated to replicate due to the short sides and long top. Thankfully, after some online research, I managed to find a method that worked for me. I also left space for the possible addition of ears. As mentioned above I will be posting a how-to tutorial on how to create Naveen’s felt suit. There will also be tutorials on how to create the other outfits worn by Naveen in the movie.

FROG NAVEEN

My frog Naveen pattern will only be available on my Patreon page. The finished height of the doll if made using 4ply yarn with a 2mm hook is approximately 9 inches. If made using DK yarn with a 3mm hook your doll will be approximately 12 inches tall.  My frog Naveen is fully wired (both the arms and legs) making him poseable. However, wiring him is completely optional – he looks the same wired or not. I would just mean that frog Naveen’s arms and legs would dangle but he can still stand if being propped up against something. To finish off my frog Naveen I added felt eyes, eyebrows and legs spots.

RAY FIREFLY

My Ray firefly pattern is only available here on my Patreon page. I have now made Ray three times using different yarn weights and hook sizes which resulted in the following approximate finished lengths: 4ply yarn with a 2mm hook was 3.5 inches long, DK yarn with a 3mm hook was 4.75 inches long and DK yarn (tripled) with a 3mm hook was 7.5 inches long. Ray requires you to sew on various different parts such as the eyes, eyelids, mouth, body lining, wings, arms and legs. I also attach yarn to give him hair and a goatee. The final feature that I added was Ray’s antennae using green coated garden wire.

LOUIS ALLIGATOR

My Louis Alligator pattern will only be available on my Patreon page. The finished height of the doll if made using 4ply yarn with a 2.5mm hook is approximately 10 inches. Louis is the most comprehensive pattern out of the entire set. This pattern takes time, both due to the size and because of the numerous parts that require sewing on. I am not sure about you but sewing part on was never my favourite part of making amigurumi. Fortunately, since finding my groove and a method that works for me I actually no longer mind it. I am also able to attach things a lot quicker too. Felt was used for the eyes, eyebrows, mouth lining and tongue. To finish off my Louis and for some added dimension, I used craft foam for the teeth and back scales.

DR FACILIER

Dr Facilier is made using the Arlo doll base which I altered to create a longer torso, arms and legs. The finished height of the doll if made using 4ply yarn with a 2.5mm hook is approximately 14 inches.
Due to the large size of the head and thin neck, this doll also requires the use of craft wire to hold up the head. As with my Princess Tiana and Prince Naveen dolls I used the eyes that I created in Inkscape. These were printed out onto T-shirt transfer paper and then ironed onto white felt. After which I cut out the eyes and glued on using felt glue. I am yet to add hair to this doll because he always wears his hat. However, I do plan to add hair at some point. As mentioned above I will be posting a how-to tutorial on how to create Dr Facilier’s suit, hat and mask.

Thank you!

Thank you for checking out my Princess and the Frog showcase. This set was the first detailed set that I made and every time that I walk past it on my shelf it brings a smile to my face. I am so excited to see this Disney Princess series grow (I also need to start thinking about where I plan on putting them all because I don’t have nearly enough space!).

My next set is Beauty and the Beast. I have already brought all the yarn and supplies for the various characters which are sat in a box ready and waiting. For the past few months, I have been desperately fighting the urge to start on this set. It has been so SO hard. This is because I promised myself that I would not start any new projects until I finish my current WIP projects and their pending PDF’s. Thankfully, I have finally made some headway and think that I may be able to start working on my Beauty and the Beast set by the end of September/beginning of October. Please stay tuned for updates on this.

Until next time – happy crocheting!
