The Midi tier pattern for this month is Hayabusa the falcon from Mulan. For those of you who do not remember, he is the lead villain’s animal side kick. I remember disliking this bird a lot when I was younger, and his sinister look did not help!
This pattern was not as complicated as I thought it was going to be. Maybe it is because it is not the first bird pattern, I have written due to having previously making Iago from Aladdin. However, I did it in a different way and leant more towards the realistic side than the cartoon/chibi side to tie it in with the rest of the Mulan characters I have made to date.
I wired the legs for some stability and pushed wire through the body to wire and support the open wings. If you do not want to use wire, the pattern can work without it, but the wings cannot be positioned as prominently.
The most complicated part of this pattern is probably the feet because to create that typical tri toe bird foot I connected the back toe on a little differently than I normally would when creating fingers or toes. Once you get past that and crocheting into the side of the stitches if you are not familiar with then then it is all plain sailing from there.
The level of detail makes Hayabusa look more complicated to make that he is so do not be too discouraged when you see him, do git it a try. Despite this pattern not requiring a lot of customisation, the little details really do bring Hayabusa to life.
I can say for once that there is nothing that I plan to do differently if I remake this pattern – which is a surprise to me because I do not say that very often!
Just to note that the wing tips should be a very dark brown or even black which I did not have on hand Scheepjes Catona in 162 Black Coffee would be perfect.
Hayabusa measures approximately 4.25 inches / 11cm tall and has a wingspan on 12 inches / 30cm.

- 4ply cotton yarn (I used Scheepjes Catona in 503 Hazelnut, 506 Caramel, 522 Primrose, 162 Black Coffee)
- 2mm crochet hook
- Yarn needle
- Craft wire
- Pliers
- Fire retardant Fibrefill
- Beige, brown, dark brown, yellow/mustard, pale pink and black felt
- Felt glue
- Scissors
- Pins
- Stitch marker
ABBREVIATIONS
A full list of the abbreviations that I use in my patterns:
- MR# – magic ring with the specified number of single crochets
- SC – single crochet (double crochet English)
- HDC – half double crochet (half treble English)
- DC – double crochet (treble English)
- INC – single crochet increase
- #in1 – the specified number of SC in the same stitch (i.e. 3in1)
- #DCin1 – the specified number of DC in the same stitch (i.e. 3DCin1)
- #HDCin1 – the specified number of HDC in the same stitch (i.e. 3HDCin1)
- hdcINC – half double crochet increase
- dcINC – double crochet increase
- DEC – invisible decrease (if it is a DEC in BLO I tend to use the 2TOG decrease method)
- 2TOG – two stitches together decrease (non-invisible) method
- *_______* X# – repeat sequence within the asterisks the specified number of times e.g. *SC, INC* x6)
- FLO – front loop only
- BLO – back loop only
- CH – chain stitches
- CC – colour change
- CH1T – chain a stitch then turn your work
- SS – slip stitch
- ST/STS – stitch/stitches
- OFFSET – a term I use when adding or taking away additional stitches in order to line up or get the right placement
- = # ROWS – repeat the stitch sequence for the row the specified number of times e.g. 32SC (32) = 5 ROWS
- FO – fasten off
