This month’s Midi Tier pattern release is Sleepy from Snow White and the Seven Dwarves.
For this pattern, I used the same base pattern that I created when making Grumpy. I just made some alterations to the torso, jacket and head. I used all the same methods and techniques, including thread contouring to shape the face.
Initially, I thought that I would have to crochet his droopy cheeks separately and attach them afterwards. However, in the end, I did not have to do this. I was able to contour using the yarn to create the droopy cheek illusion. As I said previously with Grumpy, I think that if I used acrylic yarn it would have been easier to contour and the hat would also fall better too.
I did not use any needle felting in this pattern. Instead, I used black felt for the eyebrows and just glued them on. This was primarily because the eyebrows were a very simple crescent shape.
The face details were glued on rather than stitched because it is so small and fiddly. However, if you prefer you can always stitch them on. I want to try a technique that someone on Instagram recently showed me where you can needle felt these smaller added details to make them blend better and appear more seamless. This technique would be better tested on acrylic yarn.
As I usually do, I glued the fingers to stop them from curling.
The total height of Sleepy is approximately 6.25 inches tall and 6 inches wide with the arms extended.
Materials
- 4ply yarn (Scheepjes Catona 502 Camel, 162 Black Coffee, 388 Rust, 395 Willow, 255 Shell, 514 Jade and 519 Fresia)
- 2mm crochet hook
- Yarn needle
- Fire retardant Fibrefill
- White fur trim or fabric
- Black, white, nude and camel/brown felt
- Felt glue
- Scissors
- Craft wire
- Pliers
- 3 or 4 fasteners/poppers (you could also use velcro or just stitch it closed if you prefer)
- Pins (optional)
- Stitch marker (optional)
Abbreviations
- MR# – magic ring with the specified number of single crochets
- SC – single crochet (double crochet English)
- HDC – half double crochet (half treble English)
- DC – double crochet (treble English)
- INC – single crochet increase
- hdcINC – half double crochet increase (half treble increase English)
- dcINC – double crochet increase (treble increase English)
- #in1 – the specified number of SC in the same stitch (i.e. 3in1)
- DEC – invisible decrease
- 2TOG – two stitches together decrease (non-invisible) method (I tend to use this method when decreasing in the back loop)
- *_______* X# – repeat sequence within the asterisks the specified number of times e.g. *SC, INC* x6)
- FLO – front loop only
- BLO – back loop only
- CC – colour change
- CH – chain stitches
- CH1T – chain a stitch then turn your work
- SS – slip stitch
- SSJ – slip stitch join the end and beginning of the row
- ST/STS – stitch/stitches
- OFFSET – a term I use when adding or taking away additional stitches to line up and get the right placement
- FO – fasten off
