Sultan Crochet Pattern

Sultan is the last pattern of 2021 and he is a great end to the year. He turned out so well and I couldn’t be happier. The neck is wide enough in this pattern that I didn’t need to use wire to support the head. I just made sure to stuff Sultan firmly. However, if you would like the extra support you could always still add the wire. This is a pattern that relies heavily on mixed media, the beard and eyebrows are needle felted. However, if you do not have needle felting tools on hand you could always come up with alternative ways to complete those parts. For example, you could use white felt or you could even crochet it.

The legs are wired to add some strength to the ankles, however, this is optional. I chose not to wire the arms but you can wire them if you want to. The clothes are made using felt. There is a downloadable PDF template with the clothing template. In all the pictures that I have seen of Sultan, his clothing is cream. Unfortunately, I did not have any cream felt. Where I would normally opt to go out and buy what I need I have been recently trying harder to use what I have instead of buying more and more supplies. (Because of this my crafting supplies grow continuously and I run out of space to store things). So instead of cream felt I used white for the clothing and it definitely works just as well. I wanted to use a real feather for the hat, I thought that it would be a really nice touch. But I didn’t have one, so sticking to the new goal I endeavoured to use what I had. Instead, I made a feather out of felt and it actually turned out much better than I expected. Sultan is approximately 5 inches wide (hand to hand) and 9.5 inches tall (top of the hat to the foot).

Materials

• 4ply yarn (I used Scheepjes Catona in 502 Camel, 505 Linen and 249 Saffron)
• 2mm crochet hook
• Yarn needle
• Fire retardant Fibrefill
• White, cream, yellow, turquoise felt (I didn’t have cream felt on hand so used white and it still looks good)
• Cream/off white and brown wool roving (or your chosen medium for the beard and eyebrows)
• Needle felting needle
• T-shirt transfer paper
• Inkjet printer
• Iron
• Gold and red polymer clay (or your chosen medium)
• Craft wire
• Pliers
• Felt glue
• Scissors
• Sewing needle
• White thread
• Sewing machine (optional)
• Pins (optional)
• Stitch marker (optional)

Abbreviations

• MR# – magic ring with the specified number of single crochets
• SC – single crochet (double crochet English)
• HDC – half double crochet (half treble English)
• INC – single crochet increase
• #in1 – the specified number of SC in the same stitch (i.e. 3in1)
• DEC – invisible decrease
• 2TOG – two stitches together decrease (non-invisible) method
• *_______* X# – repeat sequence within the asterisks the specified number of times e.g. *SC, INC* x6)
• FLO – front loop only
• BLO – back loop only
• CH – chain stitches
• CH1T – chain a stitch then turn your work
• SS – slip stitch
• ST/STS – stitch/stitches
• OFFSET – a term I use when adding or taking away additional stitches in order to line up or get the right placement
• FO – fasten off
