When designing my Iago, I could not decide whether or not to do his wings open or closed (or even one open and one closed). After jumping back and forth a hundred times I ultimately said to myself, “why should I have to choose?!” As a result, I came up with an idea that I have never tried before and opted to make him with moveable wings that could be either open or closed depending on my mood!
As per usual, once I completed Iago there were a few things that I decided I would change when I make him again. I mistakenly made his underarm feathers with blue tips. However, in the majority of the pictures that I’ve seen the feathers are just plain red. I prefer it this way because doing it with a colour change and then having to weave the ends in was difficult and quite tedious.

Secondly, I did not wire the legs. My thought process at the time was that the top of the thigh was wide enough that I don’t need any additional support. much to my annoyance, I soon realised the error in my thinking because I did not account for his tiny ankles. Fortunately, wire in the legs is not mandatory and my Iago still stands okay, it’s just a little bit more support would be nice and less fiddly to get him into my desired position.

Lastly, once I had completed the body I realised that I was using a 2.5mm hook instead of a 2mm hook. By that stage, I was at the point of no return and decided to just continue making Iago using the 2.5mm hook. However, as the pattern states, he should be made using a 2mm as I did when I made Abu. The overall measurements for Iago are 7 inches tall (not including the hair), 4 inches wide, and has a wingspan of 8 inches (bearing in my that I was using a 2.5mm hook).

That about sums up the key details during the making of Iago. Just keep scrolling for the pattern

You are now complete! How did your wings turn out? I have to say I absolutely love it when Iago’s wings are open, it just looks like he is about to take off. Also, the versatility in being able to close them is really the icing on the cake. This is definitely one of those scenarios where you are happy that you did not take the easy route because it was worth falling behind schedule trying to figure out the logistics of these wings. I hope that you are as happy with your Iago as I am.

I know that the feet are especially tricky when it comes to this pattern. If you need any assistance or clarification just let me know. Until the next post, happy crocheting! Chantelle X

  1. I came upon your page while looking for a pattern to make and found that none of the pictures that you refer to in your patterns show up. Is there another way to get the patterns so that I can follow your directions you post.

    • Hello,
