Happy June!
This monthโs Mini Tier pattern is finally here after a longer than expected wait. Say hello to Maui the demigod from Moana.
This Maui pattern underwent A LOT of frogging to get here. At one point (for the pecks) I had to frog 18 rows!! Which was so painful to do but had to be done. Looking at how Maui turned out, it was very worth it. The only part I am not happy with are the eyes, but my software to create and print the eyes is on the fritz. Until I am able to fix it Maui will have to live with his current scary eyes, haha.
As previously mentioned, I decided to crochet Maui with DK acrylic yarn and a 2.5mm hook (which is different to the 4ply cotton yarn and 2mm hook that was used for the other characters in this Moana series). This was because I knew it was going to too much of a huge task if I used 4ply yarn and a 2mm hook. Also, the is no need for wire to support Mauiโs head as the neck is wide enough to support it on its own.
Going in to making this pattern, only the size and shape of the body was in mind, and I was not sure on how the head or facial features were going to turn out. I decided to just go with the flow and figure it out once I got to the head. Once there, I decided it was the perfect opportunity to experiment with my stitch and thread contouring. The result was surprisingly detailed and very different to anything I have done before. I hope you like the way it turned out too.
From the beginning it was decided that I would use a black fabric marker to draw on Mauiโs tattoos. Due to the uneven surface of crochet, I wasnโt sure how it would turn out, but it came out looking more detailed than expected. The tattoos alone really brought Maui to life and is definitely a step that should not be skipped.
Annoyingly, I ran out of yarn for Mauiโs hands and eyebrow ridges. Luckily, I had a colour in my stash that blends quite well so it is not too obvious, but it does stand out a little more than I would have hoped due to being a shade lighter.
Mauiโs overall measurements are approximately 12.5 inches / 32cm tall and 8.5 inches / 22cm wide (at the widest point).
Thatโs enough of my blabbering on because you have a lot of work ahead of you! GOOD LUCK!

Thatโs me signing off for my Summer Hiatus. There will not be any new patterns released until my return. But in the meantime, if you havenโt already, please check out the other patterns available from my Moana series HERE.
