HAPPY MARCH!
This month’s Midi tier pattern is Hei-Hei the rooster from Moana.
I really underestimated the work that would be needed to create Hei-Hei. Due to the shape, my initial thoughts were that this pattern would be easy and straightforward – that was until I started breaking the character down. Then I realised just how many pieces there would be at the end – on top of which he is quite small and fiddly. SO MANY PIECES!!!! And a lot of chain stitches (I don’t like chain stitches dues to how fiddly it can be).
Although there are a lot of pieces, they are quick to crochet, so despite the repetitiveness it did not take too long to crochet the necessary pieces. Here is a picture of some of the pieces (not even all of them!), that needed to be sewn onto the body to create Hei-Hei.
Fortunately, I persevered and managed to complete him (with a bit of cheating because I glued on the small fiddly bits to save my finger as 4ply cotton yarn can be quite stiff and hard to get the needle through). So, in fact, only the legs were stitched on and the rest I glued on using my trusty Beacon 3-in-1 advanced craft glue. Hei-Hei turned out surprisingly secure and even survived some playtime after being kidnapped by the twins.
I tried to get the colour fade effect on the neck by using yellow, dark yellow and orange yarn but if you prefer you could always just stick to yellow. Just use your creative licence here.
Fortunately, no craft wire was needed to support Hei-Hei’s neck or legs, but if you make him with acrylic yarn ensure to stuff the neck firmly to provide the needed support. I was also pleased to find out that Hei Hei’s proportions are balanced enough that he can stand unaided if you put him in the right position.
Overall, I am very happy with how Hei-Hei turned out but one change that I may make when I make him again is to make his neck a little longer.
Hei-Hei measures approximately 5.5 inches / 14cm tall and 2.5 inches / 6cm wide (at the widest point).

Next month’s Midi Tier pattern is Tamatoa the crab from Moana. We are already nearing the end of the patterns for Moana so will be posting a poll for which Disney Princess movie series to complete next – so stay tuned! In the meantime check out the other patterns in my Moana series HERE.
Until the next post, HAPPY CROCHETING!
