Freebie Friday: Owl Crochet Pattern

The freebie pattern this week is Winnie the Pooh’s Owl. Owl is the last Winnie the Pooh themed pattern in this amigurumi set. As with my Tigger my original owl had a needle felted beak – a method you can copy or you can use the crochet version that is detailed in the pattern below. Crocheting Owl was an absolute must for me because he is a key character but he is also very different. It was such a challenge figuring out how to do the wings and legs but overall I feel like it turned out better than thought it would.

Materials used:

• Cotton aran yarn. I used Scheepjes Cahlista Jet Black—110, Black Coffee—162, English Tea—404, Chocolate—507 & Yellow Gold—208.
• 4mm crochet hook
• Two 9mm safety eyes
• Yarn needle
• Fire retardant Fibrefill
• Scissors
• Yellow felt
• White felt
• Felt glue
• Stitch marker (optional)

Before you start crocheting Owl’s head, you will have to crochet the eye pieces first and then connect them. Next, cut out the 2 eye pieces using yellow felt and stick them on. Using something sharp, pierce through the yellow felt where your eyes will be positioned. Push your safety eyes through the holes in the felt and through the eye piece so that the back of the eyes come out the other side of the eye piece. Set aside for later (see picture below).

Assembly:

It is quite difficult to describe in a written format how to attach the arms, legs, etc. but I have included pictures to serve as a guide. First, sew on the eyebrows and attach the head details first, such as the beak, nose flap and chin piece. This way you can hide where you tie off the black yarn and other ends at the back of the head where you connect the head and body. Once you connect the head to the body you should connect the two wings pieces and the two tail pieces together. I did this by slip stitching all around the perimeter.

To attach the head, arms and legs I used the whip stitch to assemble the parts but you can use whichever method is easier for you. I found it easier to pin the parts in place so I could sew them on symmetrically. See the next page for detailed pictures.

Here are a few optional notes for you to use when assembling your Owl:

• Whip stitch eyes piece to the head (see picture 1)
• Using picture 2 as a guide, connect the beak pieces together. Attach the beak piece and stuff lightly as you go (see picture 3). Attach the beak flap (see picture 4)
• Next, stitch the eyebrows on (also see picture 4). Cut the chin piece using white felt and then glue in place (see picture 5).
• Attach the body to the head (see picture 6).
• Attach the legs (see pictures 7 & 8).
