Birdo Crochet Pattern

As promised Birdo is one of the patterns being released this month. I used a different technique that I haven’t tried with my amigurumis before in order to make Birdo’s mouth. I really wanted it to be open. I envisioned being able to stick the egg that she spits out in her mouth. It took a little bit of trial and error but I did get there in the end. Overall, I think that it adds a nice touch and a little bit of an interactive element to this character (I still have to make the egg!). I am currently working on an improvement to Birdos eyes but will update the tutorial when I figure it out. An added bonus is that while crocheting her, I realised how similar her body shape is to Yoshi. If I do Birdo’s body in green yarn and change the way I crochet the head I will have Yoshi. So I am already 75% complete with my Yoshi pattern! The approximate measurements using DK yarn and 3mm hook are 7.5 inches height, 5 inches width (bow span) and 4.5 inches length/depth. • DK yarn (pink, black and white)
• 3mm crochet hook
• Yarn needle
• Fire retardant Fibrefill
• White felt
• Black felt
• Red felt
• Purple felt
• Felt glue
• Scissors
• Pins (optional)
• Stitch marker (optional)

Abbreviations

• MR# – magic ring with the specified number of single crochets
• SC – single crochet (double crochet English)
• INC – single crochet increase
• HDC –  half double crochet (half treble crochet English)
• 3in1 –  three single crochets in the same stitch
• DEC – invisible decrease
• BLO – back loop only
• FLO – row is front loop only
• *_______* X# – repeat sequence within the asterisks the specified number of times e.g. *SC, INC* x6)
• CC –  colour change
• CH – chain stitches
• CH1T – chain 1 stitch then turn your work
• ST/STS – stitch/stitches
• FO – fasten off
