Sebastian Crochet Pattern

Happy October!

Introducing the third and last pattern for this month – Sebastian!

Sebastian is my favourite character from The Little Mermaid movie. I always felt that despite his seemingly moody nature, he has so much character and sang the best songs! Overall I think that he is one of the main reasons why this movie was my favourite Disney movie growing up.

When it comes to the size of my Sebastian I got a little bit carried away, he turned out bigger than Flounder. When I say bigger I don’t mean just a little bit, but actually a lot bigger (just see the picture below). Also bear in mind that the Flounder in the picture is made using DK yarn and a 2.5mm hook as opposed to the 4ply yarn and a 2mm hook. So the Flounder that goes with this Sebastian will in fact be a little smaller than the one pictured. (Also, Sebastian is still in the WIP stage in this picture).

When I make my second Sebastian I intend on making some alterations so that he is smaller. In this case, I will just post a second tutorial for the smaller version. In the meantime, I suppose you could just change the yarn weight and hook size to make him smaller.

Looking back I think I know where I went wrong. Firstly, I didn’t use my Flounder as a reference to size. Also, I did Sebastian’s claw first which turned out bigger than intended. This means that the rest of him was made in scale with the claw that was clearly too big to start with! Either way, despite the size, I think that Sebastian turned out really well with a true likeness. I even impressed myself with some of the details (sorry to toot my own horn a bit!).

One thing that I did find difficult with this project, was finding the various shades of red that I needed. I didn’t want to make him in just the one shade of red. If you look at pictures of Sebastian online you will see that a number of shades of red are used. Thankfully, Scheepjes pulled through once again with their amazing colour range and I was able to make it work.

Overall, I think that the most complicated part of this project was the face. It took a lot of tweaking to get it right so that there was a true likeness. This resulted in quite a few pieces to sew on but I feel it was more than worth the tedious whipstitching.

Once again, right at the end of my project, I ran out of yarn! I really could just kick myself because it happens far too many times. However, rather than do that, I just found a shade similar to the colour I was using and finished him off. You may be able to see the colour change in the pictures. I also haven’t stitched on the face pieces with the alternative colour because I want to make them using the correct colour when my yarn arrives. So in the finished pictures, everything is just pinned into place.

Your finished Sebastian will measure approximately 7.5 inches wide and 7.5 inches tall.

This post intro turned out much longer than I had intended, so I will end it here!
